At the beginning of the 2024 spring semester, an opportunity was presented in one of my studios. The city of Urbandale, IA had put out a request for designing a new city flag that would be voted on by city council and adopted by the city. After interviewing the head of the project and looking over surveys from the city's population, the class began researching Urbandale's history and creating proposals.

My flag proposal was created with a simple two tone color scheme. This dark blue and white was chosen to represent the two counties that make up the city of Urbandale as well withstand color fading over time. The center bell represents Urbandale's founding of being a street car city for nearby mineshafts, as well as the populations celebratory nature for the city's future. The 6 stars that circle the bell represent the 6 primary school districts that are used by the population of the city. And finally the bottom curve, which symbolizes the U shape that so many of the townsfolk identify with from the old flag design while remaining subtle enough to not be an overbearing element.
