Stylized Playing Cards
Project type
Playing Card Design
Date
Sep - Oct 2023
When presented with a project where direction is entirely up to the student, one must look in directions where they are passionate. This was the case when being given and assignment to create a few set pieces from a deck of cards that represented a specific brand or style. The deliverables were required to display a Face Card, Ace Cards, and 2 Number Cards alongside Back and Box Designs.
My style aimed to recreate the Japanese style of Ukiyo-e, a style of woodblock printing that was popular between the 17th and 19th centuries. My depiction of the king was a recreation of the Kabuki Actor, Ōtani Oniji III. My back design was based off of a few different prints of Mt. Fuji, taking interesting elements from each to represent a reflection scene of the mountains sunset. The Ace card acts as a window to zoomed in details of the same mountain scene depicted on the rear of the card. The box design also displays elements of the back design, with the largest faces of the box each depicting either the sunset or its reflection with details that resemble the King cards robes along the thinner box edges.
