This project was one of the first rebrand concepts that put myself in a major controlling position. When told by our professor that we would spend the last month and a half of a semester doing a rebrand, I started out slightly concerned. But when being told we would have full choice over what brand we would work on, that concern faded.
When thinking through which brands I could see myself working on, I decided to focus on some of my interests. After deliberating for a while, my focus landed on the video game store and library Steam. The main feature of the project would be creating a new logo for the company and to construct a brand system that built off of the logo.
My logo decided to make use of simple curves and lines to make a piece constructed of 2 rotated shapes where the S was made in the negative space. While the primary logo was usually either solid white or solid black, it also had variations that were filled with set gradients as well as one with a cyan and white contrast for the company's VR system.
To work with the annual seasonal sales that the platform provides, A set of gradients and custom wordmarks were created. The initial wordmark for Steam started as a logo idea where each letter of the word was connected in a single flowing manner, and was repurposed into the sets of seasonal displays.
The branding also included a rework for the very plain boot animation and delivery box for the company's handheld console, The Steam Deck. The new boot animation rework contained a fade in idea for the Steam Decks gradient alongside a twist to open animation of the logo. The box that the system would be delivered in was also reworked from it's plain brown cardboard, to a sleek black outside that would open to the vibrant gradients and cyan on the inside.
